It's Not Laziness. It's Not Weakness. It's Depression.

  • Do you push through every day feeling empty, flat, or just... disconnected?
  • Have you pulled away from people you love because you simply don't have the energy to pretend you're okay?
  • Does it feel like you're watching your own life through a pane of glass?
  • Are the things that used to bring you joy now completely flat — nothing to look forward to?
  • Are you harder on yourself than you would ever be on anyone else?

Depression doesn't always look like crying in bed. Often it shows up as numbness — getting through the day on autopilot, fulfilling responsibilities while feeling nothing. You might look fine to everyone around you while quietly struggling with a heaviness that no amount of willpower seems to lift.

Depression can follow a loss, a relationship ending, a major life transition, or it can seem to arrive without obvious cause. It often carries shame — the voice that says "you have no reason to feel this way" or "other people have it worse." That voice is depression talking, not truth. What you're experiencing is real, it has roots, and it responds to the right kind of help.

Depression Affects Millions — And Recovery Is Genuinely Possible

Depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. In the United States, roughly one in five adults will experience a depressive episode at some point in their life. This is not a personal failing — it is a clinical condition with highly effective treatments.

With compassionate, skilled therapeutic support, people recover from depression every day. The fog lifts. Energy returns. The capacity for joy — for connection, meaning, and purpose — comes back. That process looks different for everyone, but it is genuinely available to you.

Depression Therapy That Treats the Whole Person

I approach depression with the same evidence-based combination I use across my practice: Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). For many people, depression is intertwined with unresolved grief, relational wounds, or painful past experiences that the mind and body haven't fully processed. EMDR reaches those underlying experiences directly, without requiring endless verbal analysis.

In our sessions, we'll work to understand what is driving your depression — not just manage the symptoms. We'll identify the patterns of thought, the relational dynamics, and the unprocessed experiences that are keeping you stuck. And we'll build genuine pathways out, not just coping strategies to get through the day.

I've worked with depression for over 20 years — including persistent depressive disorder, postpartum depression, depression after loss or divorce, and depression that co-occurs with anxiety or difficult life experiences. I know that depression can feel like a permanent state. I've also seen, again and again, that it isn't.

Sessions are available in-person in Phoenix or via telehealth anywhere in Arizona. If getting out of the house feels hard right now, telehealth means therapy is accessible wherever you are.

Questions About Depression Therapy

Yes — and this concern is especially understandable because depression itself undermines motivation. You don't need to feel hopeful to start. Momentum builds as we work together; many clients notice a shift in energy within the first few sessions. The act of reaching out is itself meaningful movement. You don't have to feel better to begin — beginning is how you start to feel better.

The most effective approach for many people is a combination of both, particularly for moderate to severe depression. Medication can provide relief at the symptom level while therapy addresses the underlying patterns and experiences driving the depression. I'm happy to coordinate with your prescriber or help you think through what makes sense for your situation.

This is one of the most poignant expressions of chronic depression — it becomes the baseline, and hope itself feels foreign. I hear this often. We don't need you to imagine the destination right now; we just need to take the next step. Many of my clients with long-standing depression have experienced profound changes they genuinely didn't believe were possible. Your history does not determine your future in therapy.
